How To Repair a Leaky Faucet

Leaky faucets are a common plumbing problem in the home. The constant dripping causes poor water conservation, and it also significantly increases the energy costs in your home over time. This problem however, is not difficult to correct.

There are four basic types of faucets available today: ball-type, disc, cartridge, and compression.

The compression type is commonly the most prone to leakage, as the separate hot and cold taps each have a washer and seal that must be replaced from time to time. The washer is made of a hard rubber-like material called neoprene, which over time becomes worn and will not ‘compress’ properly on the valve seat.

Turn off the water supply before beginning.

1. Remove the top of the faucet handle. The handle screw may be hidden under a cap which must first be lifted off.

2. Using an adjustable wrench, unscrew the valve stem assembly from the unit. Pliers may also be used, but care must be taken that the valve assembly is not damaged.

3. Remove the worn washer from the base of the stem assembly by first removing the brass retaining screw.



4. Cut or pry off the O-ring from the stem.

5. Replace the washer and O-ring, and reassemble the faucet. Washers and O-rings come in two sizes, both in diameter and thickness. Be sure that the correct size for each is used in the repair project. If uncertain, take the valve assembly to your local hardware store where they will assist you with the proper replacement size. It might be wise to replace both the hot and cold faucet washers at the same time.
